WRFM-TV, virtual channel 8, is an ABC owned-and-operated television station licensed to Redford, Minnesota, United States. The station is owned by the ABC Owned Television Stations subsidiary of ABC/Universal (itself a subsidiary of Comcast).
The station signed on the air on April 9, 1955 as KTPI-TV (call letters standing for Triangle Publications Inc.). Founded by Triangle Publications, which also owned WFIL-AM-FM-TV in Philadelphia (the WFIL-TV station is now WPVI-TV, a Fox O&O) and KFRE-AM-FM-TV (the television station would later become KFSN-TV), the station originally operated as a primary NBC affiliate.
As an ABC O&OEdit
In March 1985, Capital Cities announced it was buying ABC, a moved that stunned the broadcast industry since ABC was some four times larger than Capital Cities at the time. The merger was finalized on January 3, 1986; however, both WRFM and K???'s respective affiliation contracts with NBC and ABC did not expire until June 30th. As a result, ABC faced the prospect of having to run channel 8 as an NBC affiliate for five months. When WRFM ended its 31-year affiliation with NBC on July 1st, WRFM became an ABC owned-and-operated station, the first network-owned television station in the state of Minnesota (and the only one in the upper Midwest that was an ABC O&O until the network bought WCCO-TV 21 years later).
